Research & Policy
What is Research?
Research is a process of using scientific approaches to find out (or confirm) information.
What is Policy?
Policy has a variety of meanings. The Homeless Agency takes a lead role in policy development with government departments, using research to ensure its advice is evidence based.
What is the relationship between Research and Policy?
Research generates outputs or 'findings' and these in turn may indicate areas where recommendations are required. Policy involves deciding what to do in response to research - i.e. policy makers adopt new practices based on what the research findings show.
The work that takes place within the Research Team in the Homeless Agency is as follows;
- Monitor and report regularly on the level of homelessness in Dublin and the work of services to tackle homelessness (i.e. service quarterly reports and key performance indicators)
- Conduct periodic research and oversee research commissoned by the Homeless Agency
- Development of the Action Plan and other strategic/policy documents
- Develop training and promote usage of the Dublin LINK system (shared database between homeless services)
- Coordinate the assessment of homelessness Counted In 2008 and Rough Sleeper Counts
- Map continuum of services available within the homeless services and related service sectors
